Nuvio FAQ

This FAQ applies to Nuvio Mobile and Nuvio TV unless a question mentions a specific platform.

Nuvio is a media library and player that keeps your library, profiles, and watch progress organized across devices. It works with your own media and connected services. The app itself does not include a media subscription.

Addons and integrations

5 answers

What are addons?

In Nuvio, an addon connects the app to compatible catalogs and services.

An addon can provide one or more of these things:

  • Catalog rows, such as trending movies or anime lists
  • Metadata, such as posters, titles, seasons, and episodes
  • Subtitles
  • Playback from a connected service

Each addon declares its features in a manifest. Installing one does not include a media subscription.

How do addons work in Nuvio?

When you install an addon, Nuvio reads its manifest. The manifest tells Nuvio what the addon supports.

For example, one addon may add catalog rows while another adds subtitles. When you open a title, Nuvio requests only the types of data listed in the addon's manifest.

If an addon or connected service is unavailable, its catalog rows, subtitles, or playback options may not appear. Check the service in its own app or website and reconnect it if needed.

Why do I see "No playback options available"?

This means Nuvio could not find a file it can open in your library or a connected service.

Try these steps:

  • Confirm that the file is in your library or available through your connected account.
  • Check that the item is included with your account or subscription.
  • Open the service's own app or website to confirm that the item works there.
  • Check whether the title has the correct movie, show, season, or episode selected.
  • Refresh Nuvio or reconnect the addon.
Why do I see "No subtitles available"?

Subtitles may be embedded in your file or supplied by a subtitle addon. If nothing appears, check the file's available tracks, your preferred language, and the addon.

You can also choose a file that already includes the subtitle track you need.

Why is a video buffering even though my internet is good?

A fast internet connection does not rule out a problem with the file, device, player, or connected service.

Playback can buffer when a connected service is temporarily unavailable, the file uses a demanding codec, the device is low on resources, or the network connection is unstable.

Try these steps:

  • Check the same file in the connected service's own app or website.
  • Choose a lower-quality version already available to your account.
  • Restart the app and your network device.
  • Try another player engine if your platform offers one.
  • Check your device storage and available memory.

If the service's own app also buffers, contact that service for help. If every file buffers only in Nuvio, include the device, app version, and player engine when you report the problem.

Cloud library and connected accounts

16 answers

What are Cloud Services?

Cloud Services are supported personal media accounts that you can connect to Nuvio.

Once connected, Nuvio can use your account to show files already available in your cloud library and play supported files directly inside the app.

The files stay in your account with that service. Nuvio provides a browser and player for supported files.

What is Cloud Library?

Cloud Library is a Library tab view for supported files already available in your connected accounts.

It lets you:

  • Browse your cloud library from inside Nuvio
  • See supported files from connected services together
  • Open folders or grouped files
  • Pick a playable file
  • Start playback in Nuvio

Cloud Library is mainly for browsing and playback. It is not a file manager.

Why would I use Cloud Library?

Cloud Library is useful when you already have files in a supported service and want to open them from Nuvio.

Open the Library tab, switch to Cloud, and choose a supported file from your account.

Does Cloud Library change my files?

No. Cloud Library is read-only in Nuvio.

You can browse and play files, but Nuvio does not delete, upload, rename, retry, or manage files from the Cloud Library screen.

Can I delete files from Cloud Library?

No. Deleting files is intentionally not supported from Nuvio's Cloud Library.

To delete or manage a file, use the connected service's own app or website.

Which services are supported?

The available services depend on your Nuvio version and platform. Open Settings -> Cloud Services to see the current options in your app.

What happens if I connect more than one Cloud Service?

If multiple supported services are connected, Nuvio can show their libraries together in the Cloud Library view.

You can filter the view to one connected service.

Are my Cloud Service connections synced?

If Nuvio account sync is enabled, your Cloud Service connection may sync across your own signed-in Nuvio devices. This helps you avoid connecting the same service again on every phone, tablet, or TV.

Nuvio uses the connection only for features you enable, such as Cloud Library and link preparation. It is not shared with other users, public catalogs, or unrelated services.

What does "Resolve playable links" mean?

Some connected account services return a temporary playback address when you choose a file or item to open.

When Resolve playable links is enabled, Nuvio asks the selected service for that address using your connected account and its existing permissions.

Files or services that already provide a compatible playback address do not need this step.

Do I need Resolve playable links for Cloud Library?

No.

Cloud Library and Resolve playable links are separate features.

Cloud Library is for browsing and playing files already available in your connected cloud account.

Resolve playable links applies only when the selected account service requires an extra request before opening an item.

Why can resolving links in Nuvio help playback?

The connected service may need to return a temporary address before Nuvio can open an item. Preparing that address in advance can make playback start sooner, but reliability still depends on the service.

Which Cloud Service is used for link resolving?

If you connect more than one service that supports link resolving, Nuvio lets you choose which one to use.

Only the selected service is asked to prepare the address.

Will files that already open normally still work?

Yes.

If your file or connected service already provides a compatible playback address, Nuvio can open it without link preparation.

Does Nuvio add files to my cloud account?

Cloud Library does not add files to your account.

Link preparation is a separate connected-service action. What it does to the account depends on the service, so review its behavior before enabling the feature. Cloud Library itself remains read-only.

How do I enable Cloud Library?

Open Nuvio and go to:

Settings -> Cloud Services

Connect a supported service, then open the Library tab and switch from Saved to Cloud.

How do I turn off a Cloud Service?

Go to:

Settings -> Cloud Services

Choose the service and disconnect it. Nuvio will stop using that account for Cloud Library and link preparation.

Versions and store builds

3 answers

What is the difference between the full version and the Play Store or App Store version?

Full builds include features that are not available in the store versions.

Store builds remove or redirect features that app stores restrict. In practice, this usually means:

  • In-app trailer playback may be replaced with external trailer playback.
  • In-app app updates may be excluded.
  • Other restricted runtime features may be excluded depending on platform and store policy.

Addons, account features, the library, and normal playback remain available in store builds. The exact differences depend on the platform.

Why does a trailer open outside Nuvio?

In store builds, trailers may open in YouTube or another external app instead of playing inside Nuvio. This is intentional for store compliance.

Full builds can play supported trailers inside Nuvio.

Why did trailers work a few days ago, but now they do not?

Most trailers come from YouTube links found through TMDB or another compatible metadata integration. In full builds, Nuvio may request a temporary YouTube playback address so the trailer can play in the app.

Trailer playback can stop temporarily when:

  • YouTube changes something on its side.
  • YouTube rate-limits or throttles your IP address.
  • Your network, DNS, VPN, or region blocks the trailer.
  • The trailer URL expired.
  • TMDB or the connected metadata integration no longer lists a working trailer for that title.
  • Trailer enrichment is disabled in your metadata settings.

Try updating Nuvio, reopening the app, or using another network. You can also open the trailer in YouTube when that option is available.

Sync and accounts

8 answers

Why is my sync not realtime?

Nuvio sync is intentionally not live every second.

To reduce database cost, battery use, and background network activity, Nuvio syncs in batches. Most changes are pulled when the app opens, returns to the foreground, switches profiles, or runs a manual/foreground refresh.

If you changed something on another device or on the website panel, close and reopen the app, switch back to the same profile, or wait about a minute before checking again.

What does Nuvio Sync sync?

Depending on your account, profile, platform, and settings, Nuvio Sync can sync:

  • Addons
  • Collections and home catalog layout
  • Library items
  • Watch progress and resume position
  • Watched status
  • Profile settings
  • Account/profile information

You can choose Trakt instead of Nuvio Sync for library or watch progress data.

Why does the website panel show a change but the app does not show it immediately?

The app may not have pulled the newest account data yet. Reopen the app, return it to the foreground, or wait briefly for the next sync pass.

Also make sure you are using the same Nuvio account and the same profile. Profiles can have different addons, libraries, collections, settings, and progress.

What are profiles?

Profiles let different people or setups share one Nuvio account without sharing the same home layout, library, watch progress, watched history, addons, collections, and settings.

Profile 1 is the primary profile. Other profiles can either use their own addons or reuse the primary profile's addon setup.

What does "Use Primary Addons" mean?

It means that profile is borrowing the addon setup from Profile 1.

This is useful when several profiles should use the same integrations without keeping duplicate lists. If a profile uses primary addons, edit them from Profile 1.

Why can't I edit addons on this profile?

That profile may be using Profile 1's addons. Switch to Profile 1 to edit the shared list, or turn off primary sharing for that profile if you want it to have its own list.

How do profile PINs work?

A profile PIN is a 4-digit lock for opening or managing that profile.

If you set or change a PIN from another device or the website panel, a device may need to connect to the internet once before it can verify the new PIN offline.

What happens if I delete a profile or account?

Deleting a profile removes that profile's synced data, such as its library, watch history, settings, collections, and addons.

Deleting the account removes the account and synced data across profiles. Treat both actions as permanent.

Metadata and integrations

7 answers

What is TMDB enrichment?

TMDB enrichment uses The Movie Database to improve the information shown in Nuvio.

When Nuvio can match a title to TMDB, enrichment can add or improve:

  • Posters, backdrops, logos, and artwork
  • Descriptions, genres, ratings, runtime, status, and release details
  • Cast, crew, directors, writers, studios, networks, and production logos
  • Season and episode titles, thumbnails, overviews, and runtimes
  • Trailer candidates
  • Recommendations and collection information

TMDB enrichment provides title information and artwork. It does not provide media files or access to them.

Why is TMDB enrichment missing for a title?

TMDB enrichment depends on matching IDs and available metadata. It may be missing if an addon did not provide a usable ID, TMDB does not have the item, the title match is ambiguous, or the enrichment option is disabled.

What is Trakt?

Trakt is a separate service for tracking what you watch and managing watchlists, watched history, progress, ratings, comments, reviews, and personal lists.

Connecting Trakt lets Nuvio use Trakt features where supported, such as watch progress, scrobbling, watchlists, lists, comments, reviews, and recommendations.

Should I use Trakt or Nuvio Sync for library and watch progress?

Use Trakt if you want your watch history and lists to follow you outside Nuvio too.

Use Nuvio Sync if you mainly want your Nuvio devices and Nuvio profiles to stay in sync with each other.

You can connect Trakt and still use Nuvio Sync for library or watch progress.

What happens when I connect Trakt but use Nuvio Sync for library or watch progress?

Trakt remains connected, but Nuvio Sync controls the areas you selected.

For example:

  • If watch progress is set to Nuvio Sync, resume position and Continue Watching use Nuvio's synced progress instead of Trakt progress.
  • If library is set to Nuvio Sync or local library, library actions stay in Nuvio instead of becoming Trakt watchlist actions.
  • Trakt can still be used for features that explicitly rely on Trakt, such as scrobbling, comments, reviews, public lists, personal lists, and recommendations where enabled.

This is useful if you want Trakt connected without letting Trakt control your Nuvio library or resume positions.

What is MDBList integration?

MDBList is an optional ratings integration. It helps Nuvio show external ratings from services such as IMDb, TMDB, Trakt, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes-style critic/audience scores, and Metacritic where available.

MDBList adds rating data. It does not provide media files, subtitles, or access to a title.

Why are some MDBList ratings missing?

MDBList ratings depend on the title being matched correctly and on each rating provider having data for that title. Some movies or shows may only have a few ratings, and some may have none.

Collections

8 answers

What are collections?

Collections are custom home sections you can build for Nuvio.

A collection groups catalog references into a personal layout. A folder can use addon catalogs, TMDB lists and discovery tools, public Trakt lists, companies, networks, people, or directors.

Collections organize title information. They do not contain media or grant playback access.

What are home catalogs?

Home catalogs are the rows shown on the Nuvio home screen.

They usually come from catalog addons or your collections. You can enable, disable, reorder, or customize them depending on platform and settings.

Why is my home screen empty?

The most common reason is that no catalog addon is enabled, or every available catalog row is hidden.

Enable a catalog addon and its home rows, check that you are on the correct profile, and reopen the app so sync can load the latest setup.

Why do I see duplicate movies or shows?

Different catalogs can list the same title, so a movie or show may appear in more than one row.

You can reduce duplicates by hiding extra rows, reordering the home screen, or limiting a collection to the catalogs you want.

Why are posters, logos, or backdrops missing?

Artwork comes from catalog addons, TMDB enrichment, or other metadata services. If no artwork is available or TMDB cannot match the item, Nuvio may show a fallback card.

Check that TMDB enrichment and the relevant catalog addon are enabled, or check the title again later.

Can collections be synced?

Yes. Collections can be part of Nuvio Sync, so the same organized home sections can appear across your Nuvio devices and profiles when sync is enabled.

Why does a collection item have no playback option?

A collection can show title information even when the media is not in your library. Playback is available when the item exists in your library or through a connected service.

What are community collections?

Community collections are collection layouts shared by other Nuvio users.

They can include folders, TMDB references, public Trakt lists, and required catalog addons. Adding one copies the layout to your selected profile. It does not add media or a media subscription.

Community collections are user-submitted and moderated. Report a collection if it is inappropriate or broken in a way that should be reviewed.

Player and playback

11 answers

Which player engine does Nuvio use?

Nuvio uses different player engines depending on platform:

  • Android mobile uses AndroidX Media3/ExoPlayer.
  • iOS mobile uses MPV/libmpv through the native iOS player bridge.
  • Nuvio TV uses AndroidX Media3/ExoPlayer by default, with optional/beta MPV modes where available.

See the mobile and TV platform FAQ files for the exact build differences.

Why does playback behave differently on mobile and TV?

Mobile and TV do many things similarly, but they are not identical apps. They use different platform APIs, store rules, player engines, remote-control layouts, and device capabilities.

That means the same file may behave a little differently on Android, iOS, and TV.

What is an external player?

An external player opens the selected playback item in another video app installed on your device.

This can help when Nuvio's internal player has trouble with a file, codec, or subtitle format. External players may not support every Nuvio feature, such as resume tracking, subtitle selection, skip buttons, or next-episode behavior.

Why does "Open in external player" fail?

It can fail if no compatible external player is installed, the file format is unsupported, or a temporary address from the connected service expires before the player opens it.

Install a supported video player, reopen the item from your library or connected service, or try Nuvio's internal player.

What is "Reuse Last Link"?

Reuse Last Link lets Nuvio remember a temporary playback address supplied by your library or connected service and reuse it while the cache is valid.

It can make repeat playback faster. If the address expires, reopen the item so the connected service can provide a current one, or turn off reuse for that item.

What is auto-play selection?

Auto-play can choose among the playback options already available through your library or connected services.

Depending on platform settings, it may choose the first option, match a quality label such as 1080p, limit selection to enabled addons, or prefer the same option group for the next episode.

If auto-play chooses the wrong option, switch back to manual selection or adjust the matching rule.

Why did auto-play choose a bad option?

Auto-play uses the names and details supplied by your library or connected service. An option with an unclear label or earlier position may be selected even when another would work better.

Use manual selection, limit auto-play to services you trust, or make the matching rule more specific.

Why did the next episode not start automatically?

Next-episode playback needs a few things to line up: the item must be a series episode, the next episode must be known, and a playable option must be available.

If the next episode is missing metadata, has no playback option, or auto-play is disabled, Nuvio will not be able to continue automatically.

What is Skip Intro?

Skip Intro shows a skip button when Nuvio finds known intro, recap, or outro timestamps for an episode.

Nuvio may use community timestamp databases such as IntroDB and, where supported, Anime Skip. These timestamps may be missing, wrong, or unavailable for some episodes.

Why did Skip Intro not appear?

Skip Intro may not appear if the episode has no matching timestamp, the title could not be matched, the feature is disabled, or the timestamp service is unavailable.

It is most likely to work on popular series where community timestamps exist.

Why does the wrong audio or subtitle language get selected?

Nuvio can prefer audio and subtitle languages, but the final result depends on the tracks included with the file or returned by the connected service.

Some files do not label tracks correctly, and some have missing language codes or only one audio or subtitle option. If automatic selection is wrong, pick the track manually during playback.

Reporting problems
